Not impressed with my ISA returns

Not impressed with my ISA returns. Where good to start last year but seem to have lost their way.

App is good, investments not so

The app is easy to use and investing is simple. I’ve had money invested for nearly a year now though at risk level 7 and have lost money.

Low-risk is not really low-risk anymore.

I invested in the lowest risk Fixed Allocation plan 13 months ago: £500 initial investment and £100 pm afterwards. So far I have lost 3.19% or -£59. Waste of time, which hasn't even kept up with inflation. I am a professional economist and it is a generally accepted point of view that we will be having very high inflation over the next decade at least. Investors should avoid the "low-risk" plans because they all hold standard corporate bonds and government bonds. In a rising interest rate and inflation environment, these can fall very badly. I am puzzled as to why the investment managers at Nutmeg have not realised this and have not at least invested in "inflation-linked" bonds or commodities. Be aware that stock markets are also near to all-time highs at the moment so there's a real dilemma as to where to invest money when markets are too high and bonds are also too high. Nutmeg has so far a 3 year track record which has returned an average of 7% p.a. for its medium-risk product but with lower volatility than the FTSE 100, but a tracker with dividends reinvested in the FTSE 100 would have returned 8.5% over the last 3 years.

Something doesn't add up with this investment service. I accept there is volatility but I've invested in something that has supposed returns of 8% average per year and yet they've lost me 5% (£1000) within three weeks and are projecting that I'll only make 1% in the first year. Don't believe the hype or the previous performance as the reality seems far different. I dare say there will be some boiler plate response about difficult market conditions, but experts a should be making money in all markets and this outfit appear to be anything but expert.
